Musou Black vs Vantablack – what is the difference?

Many people search for "Vantablack paint" and end up here. So let us set out the situation precisely – including where we do not win the comparison.

Vantablack is no longer out of reach. The old story about Anish Kapoor's exclusivity concerns the artistic use of the original material. In January 2026 Surrey NanoSystems and Ellsworth Adhesives began the worldwide distribution of Vantablack 310 – the first Vantablack that the customer can apply themselves with ordinary spray, brush or dip equipment. It is, however, an industrial optical coating sold by quotation for space, sensor and optics applications – not an art supply you buy from an online shop, and it has no public price.

Musou Black is a different product for a different need. It is a water-based acrylic paint from Koyo Orient Japan (KoPro) that you order online, receive in a few days and apply with a brush or an airbrush without application engineering. For art, scale models, photography, AV spaces and interiors it is in practice the superblack that is immediately within reach – from Finland too.

What about Black 4.0? Stuart Semple's Black 4.0 is also an acrylic paint and also sold to consumers, and it states a higher absorption than Musou Black (99.95 %). We do not sell it and we do not claim that Musou Black is blacker. Note too that figures from different manufacturers cannot be compared directly: the wavelength range, the angle of incidence, the substrate and the number of coats vary from one measurement method to another.

Can Vantablack be bought – and is Musou Black the same thing?
Since January 2026 Vantablack 310 has been available worldwide through Ellsworth Adhesives, but it is an industrial optical coating sold by quotation for optics, sensor and space applications – not an art supply you buy online. Musou Black is a different product (Koyo Orient Japan): a water-based acrylic paint that you order online and apply yourself with a brush. If you are building a sensor or space application, Vantablack is probably the right choice – we say that plainly.

How much does Musou Black paint cost?

Is Musou Black the same as ordinary matt black paint?
No. Ordinary matt black usually reflects clearly more light. Musou Black is a specialist product intended to minimise reflections and create a considerably deeper black impression.

Can Musou Black be used in interiors?
Yes, but the application has to be chosen sensibly. It suits accent surfaces, art, AV spaces, set design and targets where maximum contrast is wanted. For surfaces that take heavy wear or washing it is not an ordinary interior paint.

Which fabric suits research or photography use?
If the most important thing is the blackest possible visible surface, choose KIWAMI or VL Flock Sheet. If the measurement extends into the near infrared – for example LiDAR, Time-of-Flight cameras or NIR imaging – the right choice is IR Flock Sheet, whose reflectance stays below 1 % across the whole 250–2500 nm range.
