Black paint – how to choose the right black for your work

Black paint sounds like a simple choice, until you notice that the same word covers very different products. Some are meant for walls, some for art, and some for removing reflected light altogether. The wrong choice does not look bad – it just looks ordinary when you were after something else, or fails when you needed durability.

Here we go through the three different dimensions of black, what each type suits, and why for most projects you should choose ordinary black.

Three things that get confused with each other

When people say that “black is not black enough”, they usually mean one of three different things:

  • Hue. Is the black neutral, or does it lean blue, brown or green? Cheap blacks often lean.
  • Sheen. A dead-matte surface looks blacker than a semi-gloss one even with the same pigment. Sheen puts reflections on the surface, and the eye reads them as grey.
  • Absorption. How much of the light stays on the surface instead of coming back. This is the only measurable quantity of the three – and it decides whether form is visible on the surface or not.

In ordinary decorative painting the first two are enough. Absorption only matters once the goal is to remove form entirely.

Ordinary black interior paint

Wall, trim and furniture paints are designed to last: washing, abrasion, contact and often moisture. A black surface looks black, but light still draws shadows and form on it – a wall looks like a wall.

Choose ordinary black for: walls, doors, mouldings, kitchen units, furniture, exterior projects, anything that gets touched.

If you are after a black feature wall, this is almost always the right answer. Super-black does not survive everyday life on a wall and was never designed to.

Artist's black

Artists' acrylic and oil blacks are made for mixability, pigment load and handling. They dry the way you want, blend predictably with other colours and are archivally stable.

Choose artist's black for: painting, mixing, glazes, work where black is used as one colour among others.

Super-black

Super-blacks are a category of their own. Their purpose is not to be a colour but to remove light. When reflectance drops below one per cent, the eye no longer finds form on the surface – a three-dimensional object reads as a flat silhouette.

The measured values of the Musou Black family give the scale. All of the figures below were measured with the same method (Total Hemispherical Reflectance, AOI 8°, visible light):

Note the spread within one family: KIWAMI reflects roughly twelve times less light than the same paint applied with a brush. Application method and material form affect the result more than the brand does.

Choose super-black for: photography and video backdrops, optical test setups, exhibition structures, set building, scale models, AV spaces, artworks where form is meant to disappear.

What super-black demands in return

  • No touching. The surface is sensitive to abrasion. A fingerprint shows and burnishes it.
  • No varnish. Clear varnish reflects, and the whole effect disappears – whatever is underneath.
  • No permanent outdoor use. The paint is designed for interiors.
  • Substrate must be prepared. Non-absorbent surfaces need priming.

Industrial coatings

At the far end of the absorption scale are industrial optical coatings, the best known being Vantablack. They are sold on a quotation basis for optics and aerospace applications, the application is engineered together with the manufacturer, and you do not apply them yourself.

In practice they are not an option for an interior, art or photography project. Comparing against them is interesting but rarely relevant to the decision.

One thing comparisons usually leave out

An absorption figure is valid only at the wavelength where it was measured. A material optimised for visible light can behave completely differently in the infrared.

An example from our own range: Musou Black Fabric FR absorbs 99.8 % of visible light but reflects 46.6 % in the near infrared at 950 nm. Completely black to the eye, bright to machine vision. If your project involves LiDAR, a ToF camera or IR illumination, the visible-light figure tells you nothing useful – that job belongs to IR Flock Sheet, the only material in the family that stays black into the near infrared as well.

In August 2026 the manufacturer supplied a measurement curve covering the full 250–2500 nm range. The working wavelength ranges for each material are collected in Musou Black alternatives compared.

For this reason, always ask two things before buying: at what wavelength and with what application method the stated figure was measured.

How to choose

  1. Will the surface be touched? If yes – ordinary black.
  2. Is the object outdoors or in a damp space? If yes – ordinary black.
  3. Do you want to remove form or colour a surface? Removing form is the only reason to pay for super-black.
  4. What light will the object be lit with? Visible light, a red laser or infrared – this decides the material.
  5. A paintable surface or a textile? Curved, flexible and demountable structures favour fabric.

Summary

The blackest black possible is rarely the right answer. In most projects durability, washability and hue matter more than the last tenth of a per cent of absorption.

But when the goal really is to remove light – a photography backdrop, an exhibition, an optical test setup, or a piece that should look like a hole into space – ordinary black will never do, and it is not worth trying.
