Musou Black IR Flock Sheet – black fabric for infrared light absorption
A black that works where the eye cannot see. Musou Black IR Flock Sheet is an electrostatically flocked rayon material developed to suppress reflections and stray light across the visible and the near infrared (NIR) – for LiDAR development, machine vision, sensor calibration and optical test environments.
IR Flock Sheet in brief
- Total reflectance ≈0.25–0.30 % in visible light · ≈0.45 % @1500 nm · ≈0.75 % @2500 nm (AOI 8°)
- Working range 250–2500 nm – the only material in the family whose reflectance stays below 1 % across the whole range
- Material: rayon base fabric + electrostatically flocked rayon pile, carbon-containing fibres
- Thickness 0.9 mm ± 0.2 mm
- Sizes: A4 sheet or roll 950 mm wide, 0.5–20 m
- Available with adhesive backing or without
- Handling: can be cut, hung and sewn into a curtain

Why ordinary black is not enough
Many black materials look very dark to the eye but reflect considerably more strongly in the near infrared. That is exactly the range most current sensor systems work in: proximity sensors, Time-of-Flight cameras, LiDAR, face recognition and vehicle cameras. The human eye does not notice the difference – the NIR sensor does.
Applications
- LiDAR development and sensor calibration, optical tunnels and prototype enclosures
- Driver and occupant monitoring (DMS/OMS) test environments
- Time-of-Flight cameras, 3D cameras, robotics and gesture recognition
- Machine vision and automated optical inspection (AOI)
- NIR darkrooms, test chambers and NIR photography backdrops
Musou Black fabrics compared
- IR Flock Sheet – the only one whose reflectance stays below 1 % in the near infrared as well
- KIWAMI – the blackest in visible light (99.905 %), but not recommended for IR use
- VL Flock Sheet – the more affordable basic choice for visible light, no IR suppression
- Fabric FR – flame retardant, for public spaces

An honest limitation
Manufacturer's note: the values are not guaranteed, and there can be slight variation between production lots. Figures marked with an approximation sign (≈) have been read from the manufacturer's 250–2500 nm measurement curve (August 2026). If you are building a measuring instrument, ask us for the numerical values and lot data.
Because of the flocking, fine fibre dust can come loose from the material. The manufacturer advises caution if cleanliness is an absolute priority or the material goes inside a precision instrument – for those cases a fibre-free alternative is often better. Creases can be steamed out without touching the surface with an iron.
Frequently asked questions
Why choose IR Flock Sheet over KIWAMI?
KIWAMI is the blackest in visible light, but the manufacturer does not recommend it for infrared use. IR Flock Sheet's reflectance stays below 1 % across the whole 250–2500 nm range: about 0.25–0.30 % in visible light, about 0.45 % at 1500 nm and about 0.75 % still at 2500 nm. For NIR applications it is therefore the right choice.
Does IR Flock Sheet also work in visible light?
Yes. In visible light the reflectance is about 0.25–0.30 %, so the material serves the eye and the sensor at the same time. It is a practical choice when a test environment needs both.
Is an adhesive-backed version available?
Yes. Every size is available both without adhesive and with adhesive backing – the adhesive version is handy for the inner surfaces of devices and enclosures.
Can the material be cut and sewn?
Yes. IR Flock Sheet can be cut, used as a covering material, hung or sewn into a curtain. It also suits large surfaces and temporary test setups.
