Musou Black alternatives compared – how to choose correctly

When you look for alternatives to Musou Black, you quickly run into bare percentages: 99.4 %, 99.9 %, 99.965 %. They look comparable, but they are not. Here we go through what the figures actually mean, which super-black suits which job, and what to check before ordering.
One number is not enough – and here is why
Light absorption is always stated at some wavelength and with some application method. Without those conditions the number is just a marketing figure.
Musou Black paint is a good example. The manufacturer's measurement curve (Total Hemispherical Reflectance, AOI 8°) shows the same paint as two different products depending on how it is applied:
- With an airbrush reflectance is about 0.6 % – that is, absorption 99.4 %
- With a brush reflectance is about 1.2 % – that is, absorption 98.8 %
The difference is twofold, and it comes purely from the working method. If you compare another product's sprayed figure with your own brushwork, you are comparing two different things.
The second condition is wavelength. Most figures are measured in the visible range, typically at 550 nm. That tells you nothing about how the material behaves in the infrared – and the difference can be dramatic. Flame-retardant Musou Black Fabric FR absorbs 99.8 % of visible light but reflects 46.6 % in the near infrared at 950 nm. Completely black to the eye, bright to machine vision.
From this follows a simple rule: always ask at what wavelength and with what application method the figure was measured. If the seller cannot answer, the figure is not comparable.
Which material suits which job
Musou Black is not one product but a family in which each member has its own task. The most common mistake is choosing the wrong product for the right job. In August 2026 the manufacturer supplied a measurement curve covering 250–2500 nm – from the edge of the ultraviolet, through visible light, into the near infrared. That makes comparison within the family meaningful for the first time, because all the figures come from the same measurement with the same method.

“Working range” in the table means the range in which the material stays fit for its intended task. Above it, reflectance rises steeply – not gradually but within a few tens of nanometres.

Three recurring selection mistakes
VL Flock Sheet near red light. VL performs excellently in visible light, but its reflectance rises steeply from about 700–750 nm. Near a red laser, red LED lighting or the NIR boundary it fails. That job belongs to IR Flock Sheet, whose curve stays flat.
Fabric FR for an infrared application. FR exists because of the fire rating, not because of infrared. Its 46.6 % reflectance at 950 nm makes it the wrong choice for machine vision – even though it looks just as black to the eye as the others.
KIWAMI on an optical bench with an NIR source. KIWAMI is the blackest in the family – but in visible light. Its reflectance rises steeply from about 800 nm, so it is just as wrong a choice for an NIR application as FR. This is the most insidious of the three, because KIWAMI is precisely the product whose figures look best.
Vantablack – why it usually is not an option
Vantablack is the name that comes to mind first. It is, however, a different product category: an industrial optical coating sold on a quotation basis for optics and aerospace applications. You do not buy it online or apply it yourself, and the application is engineered together with the manufacturer.
Comparing against Vantablack is therefore rarely the right question. The right question is whether an available material is enough for your project – and usually it is.
Black 4.0
Black 4.0 is an acrylic paint aimed particularly at artists and sold to consumers. It is a genuine alternative to Musou Black when the job is a paintable surface.
The practical differences are worth checking yourself, because both manufacturers update their products. The same things matter in the comparison as above: at what wavelength the figure was measured, with what application method, and whether the surface withstands the handling it will get in your project. For Musou Black this information is on the product page together with the measurement conditions.
One thing separates the product families clearly: Musou Black is also available as fabrics – flame-retardant, contact-tolerant and infrared-optimised. If your object is not a paintable surface, a paint comparison will not solve your problem.
How to choose – four questions
- At what wavelength is the surface lit? Visible light, a red laser or NIR? This narrows the options fastest.
- Is the object a paintable surface or a textile? A curved, flexible or demountable structure favours fabric.
- Will anyone touch it? Super-black surfaces are sensitive to abrasion. There are dedicated products for contact tolerance.
- Is a fire rating required? Public spaces often require NFPA 701 or EN 13501. Fabric FR meets both.
What to check before ordering
- Substrate. Non-absorbent surfaces need priming.
- No varnish. Varnishing destroys the absorption – a glossy surface reflects, whatever is underneath.
- Not for permanent outdoor use. The paint is designed for interiors.
- Storage 5–25 °C.
- The application method decides the result. If you are after that 99.4 %, it takes an airbrush and thin coats.
Summary
Comparing blackness percentages without the measurement conditions is misleading. Once you know the wavelength, the application method and the wear the object will face, the choice is usually easy – and often it is not the product with the biggest number in the brochure.
