Musou Black – the world's blackest paint (99.4% absorption) | Dekoja
Imagine the moment an object disappears in front of your eyes. Musou Black is a water-based super black paint that absorbs up to 99.4 % of visible light and turns a surface into optical "black hole" darkness. A painted object looks almost two-dimensional: shadows vanish and the eye cannot find the shape.
In brief
- Absorbs up to 99.4 % of visible light (550 nm, airbrushed) – 98.8 % by brush
- Odourless and water-based: VOC < 1 %, tools clean with water
- No special equipment: applied with an ordinary brush or airbrush
- Coverage: approx. 0.9 m² / 100 ml by brush, approx. 0.64 m² / 100 ml by airbrush
- Drying: touch dry 15–30 min, fully cured 24 h
- Sizes: 100 ml and 1 l from stock, 15 l to order
- Dispatched in 1–3 working days from our own warehouse in Finland – shipped within the EU, no customs or import charges
What Musou Black is made for
An emptiness that makes you look
The depth of Musou Black is on a par with gallery installations and film sets. The work appears to float, and the viewer keeps staring.
The secret weapon for scale models
Two thin coats and the shadows disappear into infinity. A diorama stands out in competition because the black is actually black.
A contrast jump for home cinema
Spray frames or speaker grilles: the edge of the projector beam disappears and image contrast rises visibly.
A studio without solvent fumes
The water-based formula means practically no odour and 30-minute drying. The crew will thank you for the clean air.
How to get the best result
- Prepare non-absorbent surfaces. Smooth plastic, metal and glass should be lightly scuffed and primed with a thin black primer. Primer evens out absorption and saves Musou Black.
- Apply two thin coats. One coat covers, but two thin coats produce the real super black. A third coat maximises the effect under very bright studio light.
- An airbrush gives the most even finish. The manufacturer recommends an airbrush. Consumption is roughly 1.4× that of a brush, so plan your quantity accordingly.
- Do not varnish. A protective lacquer destroys the effect – the light-absorbing powdery surface is the whole point. The surface therefore stays delicate to the touch.
Need the tools? See painting supplies: safety glasses, nitrile gloves and masking tapes.
An honest limitation
Because of the powdery light-absorbing layer, the mechanical strength of the coating is low. On surfaces exposed to repeated stress the coating can come off or scratch, and the painted surface can shrink and crack. Musou Black is a specialist product for accent surfaces, art and light control – not an ordinary hard-wearing interior paint.
Musou Black vs. Vantablack vs. Black 4.0
Many people reach this page while searching for Vantablack or Black 4.0. So here is the difference stated plainly – including where we do not win the comparison.
| Musou Black | Vantablack 310 | Black 4.0 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer | Koyo Orient Japan | Surrey NanoSystems, UK | Stuart Semple, UK |
| Stated absorption | ≤ 99.4 % (550 nm) | Vantablack technology up to 99.965 % | 99.95 % (manufacturer's claim) |
| Type | Water-based acrylic paint | Carbon-nanotube optical coating | Acrylic paint |
| Sold to | Anyone – directly online | Industry, via distributor, on quotation | Consumers, online |
| Application | Brush or airbrush, no special expertise | Spray, brush or immersion – application engineering with the distributor | Brush or spray |
Three things worth knowing
1. The numbers are not directly comparable. Every manufacturer measures with its own method: wavelength range, angle of incidence, substrate and number of coats all differ. The 99.4 % figure for Musou Black was measured at 550 nm with airbrush application. A tenth of a percentage point between different manufacturers' claims therefore does not mean a difference you could verify by eye or with the same instrument.
2. Vantablack is no longer "not for sale". The old story about Anish Kapoor's exclusivity concerns artistic use of the original material. In January 2026 Surrey NanoSystems and Ellsworth Adhesives began worldwide distribution of Vantablack 310 – the first Vantablack formulation a customer can apply in-house with standard spray equipment. It is, however, an industrial optical coating sold on quotation for space, sensor and optics applications – not an art supply you buy from a webshop. If you are building sensor or satellite stray-light control, Vantablack is probably the right choice, and we will not claim otherwise.
3. Black 4.0 states a higher figure than Musou Black. We do not sell it and we do not claim Musou Black is blacker. If your only criterion is the highest stated absorption percentage in a paint, compare both.
When Musou Black is the right choice
- Shipped from within the EU. Dispatched in 1–3 working days from our warehouse in Finland – no customs, no import charges, no weeks of waiting on a non-EU parcel.
- Water-based and odourless. VOC below 1 %, tools clean with water. Suitable for interiors, studios and educational use without dedicated ventilation.
- No special equipment or application engineering. A brush is enough to start.
- The whole material family from one source. If paint is not the right form for your project, the same factory makes the fabrics: KIWAMI (99.905 %), Fabric FR with fire-test documentation and IR Flock Sheet for near-infrared and LiDAR.
And when it is not. If you need documented optical performance for a precision instrument, a wear-resistant surface, or reflectance below 0.1 %, tell us. We will point you to the right material or to another supplier – we do not sell the wrong product for the sake of a sale.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the same thing as Vantablack?
No. Vantablack is Surrey NanoSystems' carbon-nanotube optical coating; Musou Black is a Japanese water-based acrylic paint. Vantablack 310 has been available worldwide through Ellsworth Adhesives since January 2026, but it is an industrial coating sold on quotation for optical and space applications. Musou Black you can buy on this page and apply with a brush. A detailed comparison table is further up this page.
Is Musou Black the world's blackest paint?
It is one of the blackest paints available for purchase, but not the only candidate: Black 4.0 states a higher absorption percentage. We do not claim Musou Black wins every comparison – its strengths are the measured 99.4 % performance, the water-based formula, easy application and fast dispatch from the EU.
Does Musou Black adhere to plastic?
Yes. Smooth plastic should still be lightly scuffed and primed with a thin black primer, because non-absorbent material may require surface preparation before application. Priming secures adhesion and saves paint.
Will the paint stay on if the structure flexes in use?
On a flexing structure the risk of cracking is real. Applied in thin coats the paint tolerates movement clearly better than a thick layer, but strong bending can crack the surface. Paint for rigid parts, fabric for flexing parts is often the safer solution.
Should the painted surface be sealed or varnished?
No. A protective lacquer destroys the super black effect, because the powdery light-absorbing surface is the whole point. The surface is ready as soon as it dries, but stays delicate to touch and abrasion.
How much paint does an airbrush use?
With an airbrush coverage is about 0.64 m² / 100 ml, roughly 1.4× the consumption of a brush (0.9 m² / 100 ml). The manufacturer recommends an airbrush because it gives the most even and blackest result.
How many coats are needed?
Two thin coats produce the real super black. One coat already covers well, and a third maximises the effect under very bright studio light. A thin coat always beats a thick one.
Can Musou Black be used outdoors?
Yes, but a bare painted surface can fade in sunlight and does not withstand mechanical wear. Outdoor use suits short-term projects such as event set design, not permanent weather-exposed surfaces.
Can you paint a car with Musou Black?
For show and camera cars yes, for a daily driver no. The result is astonishing, but the coating scratches in traffic use and cannot be protected with lacquer. Wheels, interior panels and details are safer targets.
Should I choose the paint or the fabric?
Paint suits three-dimensional objects and fixed surfaces. The fabrics are blacker (99.8–99.9 %) and handle contact better, so for backdrops, curtains and studio use choose KIWAMI fabric.
Is primer needed?
On porous surfaces a thin black primer evens out absorption and saves Musou Black. On non-absorbent surfaces primer is practically essential for good adhesion.

Visible light reflectance comparison
The table compares how Musou Black materials reflect light when it hits the material at an 8-degree angle. The lower the value, the more matte and the blacker the material. This matters especially in optical applications and when assessing a material visually.
